“And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria. So all went to be registered.
Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with his Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child. So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.” Luke 2: 1-7
Imagine how Mary felt learning that they were going to be traveling to a different town. Imagine how she felt sleeping in the stable each night, knowing her baby’s birth was soon coming. Imagine how Mary felt knowing this baby would one day save the world.
Any mother of multiple children knows that the first born baby is different than any other. With the first one, you feel the strong need to protect it from every particle of dirt, every germ, every breathe of another human, every loud noise, and the basics of life in general! The level of “protector” is heightened in a new mama. Until the second, third, and so on come along, your survival mode kicks in and you realize how equipped babies naturally are! A trip to the sterilizer each time a pacifier falls on the ground isn‘t as necessary as it once was! Thinking back to Bethlehem, this baby about to be delivered was Mary’s first born. She also had the task of bringing our Savior into the world. I wouldn’t want to risk anything to harm the baby or be responsible for screwing it up, how about you?! Yet we find her and Joseph traveling to another town, finding rest in a stable and laying the newborn Babe in a manger. If ever there was a time to trust the Lord, I believe this would be it! Mary believed (Luke 1:46) the Lord when He had told her that she was the chosen one to bring forth the Son of the Highest (Luke 1:30-33). As the story unfolds, Mary continued to believe that the Lord would provide and make a way for His promise to be true. It is an inspiring story of a faithful servant who put all her trust in the Lord, followed carefully the path God led her on and allowed the Author to write her story.
Scripture tells us that God is the same yesterday, today and forever (Hebrews 13:8). Knowing God was able to bring a Savior to the world in such a miraculous way, then surely the same God, if He chooses, can deliver you from any burden you carry. When we allow the spirit of worry, anxiety, and fear to come over us, it is ultimately telling God that we question His worthiness. The same God who brought forth a baby in a stable, born of a virgin, is worthy of our complete trust! Are you choosing to trust Him completely today?
“Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock.” Isaiah 26:4
“Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.” 1 Peter 5:7
